Advanced Peroneal Isotonic Strength
Key notes
- Type of exercise: Isotonic strength
- Muscles used: Peroneus longus and peroneus brevis
- Good for: Developing strength in the peroneal muscles and building coordination. Also good for rehabilitating lateral ankle sprains.
- When to use during rehab: Mid stages
Equipment options
If you’re doing this exercise with a patient in clinic, you’ll need an exercise step as well as something that will assist their balance (such as a broom handle). If the patient is doing this exercise at home, they can stand on a step and use a chair or wall to support themselves.
Method
- Have your patient place the medial half of their foot onto the step, while the lateral half hangs off the edge. They should be stood on one leg, using a wall (or any stable object) for balance, although the balance aid should not be used to support the patient’s full body weight.
- Next, have them invert and then evert the foot for 2 to 3 seconds at a time.
- The patient should feel the peroneal muscles on the side of the leg tensing as they do this.
